Moving to a new home, whether it's your main residence or a second home, usually is a large task. If you approach it more organized it'll be less complicated. Be prepared to keep lists of what's in each box. When packing a box - have pen and pad handy and write down everything that's placed in the box. Give the box a number (write it on the top and all four sides) and give the list the same number. This makes it simple once the move is done to grasp what's where, so you can unpack in an appropriate way. Make efforts to keep the lists together in a safe place so you can refer back to it till the last box is emptied.
Before starting to pack ensure you have enough "moving" supplies available. You'll clearly need plenty of boxes. Different sized boxes are good too so you can pack smaller things into smaller boxes. Try hard not to get boxes that are too large unless you want them for one or two "large" items like table lamps, and so on. If you have got a big box you may be tempted to over stuff it and doing that might cause the contents to smash or could cause the container to be too heavy to pick up and move.
Have newspapers to wrap breakables. You may use packing paper, bubble wrap and tissue paper or even towels and small blankets to help cushion and wrap breakables. Have lots of tape to tape the boxes shut. Consider using plastic boxes for some items such as items that may spill or leak.
Once your boxes are packed - color coordinate them with coloured stickers to match with rooms in the house. As an example, yellow could be kitchen, green living room, and so on. That way when the movers get the boxes to the new place you can tell them to put certain colored boxes to the right rooms. Even post signs in each room: "Yellow - Kitchen", etc, to help get the boxes to the right rooms.
Use strong shopping bags and those large zip-loc bags to pack some things. This sort of bag is good to pack stuff like clothing, linens and blankets. These things will go simply in the trunk and back seat of the automobiles. Be certain to add the color stickers with a number so you will know which rooms they have to be in - and add them to the list so you will know what's in them.
